An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off of the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other parts of the house.
The formation of ice dams on your roof follows this process:
1. Indoor heating rises, warming the roof surface from beneath through the ceiling and into the attic.
2. Snow on the heated section of the roof melts and travels downward until it encounters a cooler roof segment with temperatures below freezing. The water then freezes, creating an ice dam.
3. The ice dam's size increases as it receives additional melting snow from above. However, the water trapped by the dam remains in liquid form.
4. Over time, the water seeks out openings or cracks in the roof covering, gaining access to the attic. From there, it may penetrate through the ceiling and into the interior walls of the structure.
